Upgraded chat software to 3.0.0

Submitted by eddycurrents on Sat, 07/10/2004 - 11:35pm

I upgraded our version of PHPOpenChat to 3.0.0 (no beta). According to the website, the latest version:

The PHPOpenChat-Team, led by Michael Oertel, is pleased to announce the release of PHPOpenChat 3.0.0. The 3.0.0 release is the most stable, feature complete version of PHPOpenChat to date.

* minor bugfixes
* added RDF, Semantic Web and FOAF support

I tried it and it seems fine. Any problems let me know.

Still no logging.

Linking to other websites

Submitted by camidon on Sun, 04/11/2004 - 12:22am

I was surfing Ralan's the other night, and found a slew of writing/crit group links. Let's get out updated webpage site onto that list (ralans.com; writing links; groups; emailauthor@ralan.com)--Elizabeth, as moderator, want to do the formalities? I'm sure if we looked around, we'd find a lot more places to put our link and get our group back in a semi-conscious webstate. We should keep a record of what pages link to SFWW for future use.

Chat Logs

Submitted by camidon on Wed, 04/07/2004 - 5:09pm

Is there a way to make the chat logs page chronological? From most recent chat to oldest chat, with our chat schedule at the top?

Oh, enlighten me, those of better technological prowess than I.

Changed Forum permissions

Submitted by eddycurrents on Mon, 03/29/2004 - 11:36pm

As per our chat tonight, I experimented with the settings...

I changed the forum permissions so now anyone can read the Forum headings, however only registered users can read the posts.

I can also change it so anyone can read the posts, but only registered users can add posts.

I can make all these changes on a forum by forum basis. So I can make certain forums hidden to non registered users, such as Idea Parking Lot.

Plus I created a Guest Book that anyone can use to drop by and post something.

New version of chat software

Submitted by eddycurrents on Wed, 03/17/2004 - 6:15pm

I uploaded a newer version of the PHPOpenChat software. This is 3.0 beta 8, we had 3.0 beta 5.

They added the following features:

* Template class improved to make it easier to build up new template-sets.
* rdf news feed containing all chatters currently online and the last fifty 'spoken' lines of all channels.
* 'watch-server' so that chatters can spy a channel before they login.
* chat history to make it possible to show the last lines of a channel when a user login or changes the channel.

The chat history is nice. When you join, you get the last 50 lines of the chat so you can jump right into the conversation.

They also added a new template, which changes the input screen around. I like the colors in "water" better but the horde of new smileys are cool. It you want to try it out, click on Configure then select "hhc_gt".

Alas, they still haven't gotten chat logging into this version, so we will still have to copy and paste if we want to save a chat session.

Chat locations

Submitted by DaveK on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 11:35pm

Since SFWW now has it's own chat room should we use that for all chats? That way non AOL members can participate in both chats per month.

OR

Keep the AOL one because it can attract new members.

Enticing new members

Submitted by DaveK on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 11:24pm

I want to capture two ideas that I think would help us get new members. One of mine was to reduce the number of critiques needed before a new member could submit a story. This would only be for the first submission and would be limited in time until we build up the membership.

Another idea, but I forget whose, is to allow non members to read this forum (or parts of it, keep some secrets to lure them in) but not to post.

Finally, for those of you who remember, how did you find SFWW and what enticed you to join?
