May Prompt

“Witchcraft? You’re reading a book about witchcraft?”

            "It’s for a school report.”

“For school? . . .In my day. . . Never mind. I hope your teacher is open-minded.”

Heather grinned. “Not really. But she said, ‘Anything’.”

“Hmm. Do you think perhaps an interesting history book? England or France in the Middle Ages? Or perhaps even science. Lots of interesting things to read about there.”

“We get too much history. It bores me. And I hate science.”

Reluctantly, the nice children’s librarian checked the book out. But as Heather turned away, the librarian stopped her. “This one was just returned this morning. All about stars. Beautiful pictures. Why don’t you take that also.” She paused a second. “It couldn’t hurt. Maybe you could add a bit on astrology.” Heather didn’t see the librarian’s fingers crossed behind her back as she said that. “I do believe old time witches paid attention to the moon and stars.”

Heather looked dubious, but she liked the librarian. “Oh, all right.”

She left, and clutching both books—the one about stars was rather heavy—skipped down stars to the main level and out the door. There, the unexpectedly heavy weight of both books betrayed her. They began to slip. She grabbed but missed. They fell. Fortunately they both fell flat so were undamaged. The bigger one, however, landed open. Heather picked it up, staring at the pages. The pictures were beyond beautiful. She sat down on the library’s front steps and leafed slowly through the book. So very beautiful. She felt as if all space and time were opening in front of her.
