This covers the time when the destination world is near and it is time to shift from thinking about the voyage process to the act of colonization. There are a few ways this could work:

1. If the destination was always known, adaptation could be proactively controlled, in a slow, deliberate pace.

2. If the destination is discovered enroute, adaptation could begin during the later phases of the journey.

3. Adaptations might not begin at all until the colonists land and know what they have to work with.

End Voyage type stories might co-exist with Middle Voyage stories because of differing distances the colonists have to travel, or the relative speeds at which they travel, or for any number of other reasons. Even all three conditions above could co-exist since different sponsoring groups would have different critera and available technology for deciding these things.

Possible storylines might explore:

  • What happens when the planet is already settled
  • If evolution/gene engineering takes place on the ship, do the colonists like adapting from a space race to a planet race
  • How much more are the colonists able to learn as the planet gets closer...is it good or bad
  • What evaluation criteria are used for determining habitability
