I had this idea for a long time and finally wrote it down. I hope you find it amusing.

Global Warming: A Re-evaluation and a New Solution

by Dave Krenitsky

THE PROBLEM

For the last forty years there has been growing concern about the climate of our planet. Global warming has been identified as a threat to the current status quo. The world has evolved to fit the climate as it existed for the past hundreds of years. The warming climate is changing that and will cause major disruption to many species if it continues.

THE ACCEPTED CAUSE

The problem was identified in the late twentieth century. The major cause is believed to be the addition of "green house gases" to our atmosphere from the expanding use of fossil fuels. Many computer models have been created to predict the future behavior of the atmosphere. A problem with these models is that there are many adjustable parameters and the history of the earth’s temperature behavior is not known in sufficient detail to be a good starting boundary condition.

AN ALTERNATIVE CAUSE

I believe there is another cause. In the late nineteenth century an entomologist from New Zealand, George Hudson, proposed moving the clocks forward by two hours in order to provide more sunlight in the summer months.. In the early twentieth century an Englishman, William Willett, pushed for the system to be adopted in England but it was not adopted in any country until World War I when Germany introduced it. Its use has been spotty until the mid twentieth century when is was adopted by many industrialized countries. The months in which it is active have been extended and is now in force during much of the spring and fall months.

So the cause of the planet heating up is obvious: adding an extra hour of sunlight can only be a major factor in the rising temperatures. Although the extra hour of sun is welcome the increased temperatures aren’t.

A SOLUTION

We must do away with DST. While most of us would prefer not losing the extra hour of sleep caused by the movement of the clocks forward in the spring we do enjoy the extra hour we gain in the fall as the clocks are moved back. We can keep that one hour vacation if we reduce the length of the day by about ten seconds (actually 3600/365). After a year, in order to sync the clocks with the natural day cycle we will need to move the clocks back. All without the corresponding spring forward. This should slowly allow our climate to resume its normal cycle and seasons.
