Spring Thaw

Dave Krenitsky

I roll out of bed and amble to the kitchen. I scoop up a generous portion of scrambled eggs and add six pieces bacon. The spring thaw has hit and it is time to start plowing the fields. We spent the last week getting the equipment ready and finally the ground is firm enough so the tractor won’t sink in. The other crews wander in and fill up. As usual I’m early, probably due to my special forces history. It also got me a pretty cush job. I grab a thermos of coffee and my driver and I walk over to our rig. I pick up my AR and an extra mag then climb into the gunners position on the John Deere. This early in the spring only a few zombies have thawed out. Most had migrated deeper into the mountains in the fall and won’t be thawed for a few move weeks. I’ll need more mags then.
