Unrequited

"Sargent Franks have a seat and close the door behind you," the Captain said.

I did and took the seat across from him.

"The department is being sued for unlawful death."

"Whose death? I haven't shot anyone or been involved in any shooting."

"The android."

"It's an android. Not a human or even an animal. It was a hostage situation. Maybe property damage."

"That's the second suit. Tell me about what happened."

"My report and camera--"

"TELL me about it." The captain slid a glass of water across the desk.

I took a sip. "The call came in on 911. All we got was an address and that someone was being held hostage. We took the SWAT and...

"Looks peaceful doesn't I," Jones said.

"Always does," I said. "Manuel, anything on the scanner?"

"Looks like two heat sources. Other apartments are empty"

"Makes it simple," Jones said "Fifty-fifty chance of hitting the right one."

I gave Jones a dirty look. "Manuel, what do you mean sources?"

"Well one is human, for sure, probably female. The other is sketchy. Could be human but some areas read above one twenty."

"So robot or android. We got plans on the apartment?"

"Only the one entrance. Both are in the first room. The robot is on the right."

"Any way of contacting them?"

"No cell signals from the room. Oh, and the door is a LifeSecure model. We'll need some charges to get in," Manuel said.

"Manuel, suit up and rig the door. Jones, get us a shield and ear protection. I'll get the weapons."

We helped Manuel with his body armor then hide behind the shield. "Manuel give us a count when you're ready." I handed Jones the gun.

"You don't think the boom will be enough to let us know when to go?" He pulled the mag and worked the action. He put the mag back and chambered a round.

He may be a smart ass but he knew what to do. Manuel tapped on our shield and held up five fingers. Then four. We braced the shield. The nice thing about breaching charges is that they are quieter than you expect but even behind the shield you felt like you had been kicked by a horse. We pushed the shield over and charged in over it.

I drained the glass. "I went in first. The two were on the couch. The android jumped up and charged at me. I put two in its body and one in the head. I'm sure the video shows that."

The Captain sighed. "That it does. The woman had stolen the android and was holding it. It made the 911 call. The blast broke the restraining leash she had on it. It was trying to go for the door."

"You believe that?" I said.

"It's memories were recoverable."

"The suits? Unlawful death?"

"Will be dismissed. The US Androids wants to be reimbursed for the destruction of its property."
