At least this is short. I thnk the idea is fine but I couldn't get the words right.

FurBabies Inc

The office in FurBabies Inc. was large enough to hold their representative, a family and the 3D holo viewer. Mr Jones pulled out the seats for the couple and sat behind his desk. "I see you're looking for a dog. Large'ish but not too big and capable of playing gently with a six year old but not too puppyish for a teenager."

"Right," Fred said. "We have a mid-aged Rottweiler now and he's not interested in retrieving and he's too big to wrestle or play tug with either of our daughters. We've thought of a new puppy but we both work and don't have the time for training, house breaking, that kind of stuff. So, we're wondering how one of your robo-dogs would fit in.""

"Well, you've come to the right place. And we don't care for the term robo-dog. We say, artificial canine companion. ACC for short. Our ACCs come in sizes from miniature poodle to Great Dane. As for playing the third generation ACI adjusts its play level based on the age, size and temperament of the person it's playing with. Of course there is no house training needed and they all come with a standard suite of play routines and obey the usual commands, come, sit, stay, etc. If you want other behaviors like hunting, guide dog, or life assistant those are extra."

"What's ACI?" Mary asked.

"Oh, that’s Artificial Canine Intelligence. It's FurBabies patented control system. By the way, FurBabies is the largest supplier of assistant animal surrogates in the USA."

"They're safe with children, right? They follow the three laws, right?" Mary asked.

"Not exactly. USR owns the patents and copyrights on the three laws. And having three laws that interact with each other can result in corner cases. So we've made it very simple. No FurBaby can harm a human or any other animal. They also have to follow orders and protect themselves."

"They can't harm anyone?"

"Correct. Shall we get started?" He started the holo display and made some entries on a tablet. "I've put in the typical size for a Rottie." He handed the table to the couple. "You can make adjustments from there or you can select a breed you like and work from that. I'll leave you alone to work on it. Just press the 'CALL' button on the lower left if you have questions."

Rusty sniffed at the dog like thing in front of him then jumped back as it sniffed back. A low growl showed his thoughts on the intruder.

"No, it's OK Rusty. This is Robbie. He's a friend for you and the girls." Fred bent down and petted both of them. "See he's friendly."

Rusty walked to his favorite spot and lay down.

Fred, Mary and Rusty watched as their kids played with the new dog. It would fetch, roll over shake hands and do all the tricks that Rusty did when he was younger.

"Girls, your dad and I have to go out tonight. Emma, you know the bed times."

The police escort got Fred and Mary home in record time. In front of their house were a half dozen cars with lights flashing. Inside they hugged their two daughters then talked to the police Captain.

"What happened?" Fred asked.

"Near as we can tell that guy," he pointed to a man in cuffs being led to a police car, "disabled your security system then came in and tried to take one of you girls. Your dog, the big black one, grabbed his gun arm, broke the wrist, then sat on him until your girl called the police and they arrested him."

"And the other dog?"

"The robo dog? Whatever the perp did to disable the alarms disabled it too. Must be some kind of EMP or something."

I like this story; it's an intriguing situation. One thing I might suggest is that you maybe sharpen the situation with a couple of little bits showing more of the household while the robo dog is there.  Maybe the mother says something about how although they had to pay a lot upfront for it, it's cheaper now they don't have to buy a lot of dog food, etc. Or one of the kids makes a remark about how they like not having to walk the dog all the time. You can undoubttedly come up with much better ideas, subtle, not cliches, showing the old dog being supplanted, and that could make the situation more vivid.

Another idea just struck me. The two sentences that read, "No FurBaby can harm a human or any other animal. They also have to follow orders and protect themselves" might actual lead to the ACC being unable to act as a guard dog in this situation--if you wanted to go that way. Have fun.
