My apologies. Try as I may I can't get into this story. To make it harder, this morning I ordered a new computer so I'm all excited by that and can't concentrate. The story was to be about a colony ship that has delivered its people and is then expected to stay around and help them. Instead it found exploring so exciting it wants to continue on to another world. I was thinking of making the computer a fan of old time AI movies which inspired the "Dave exchange" like in 2001. But alas my mind keeps wandering to my new toy. Hope you two do better.
To Boldly Go
Ship settled into orbit around the colony world. Ground control contacted him. "How are things out in the system? Mining robots working OK?"
"Everything is fine. You should be receiving some more rare earths soon and the helium 3 production is on schedule. The orbiting manufacturing and repair stations are fully operational. You are now officially a self sufficient colony."
"Good to hear. I suppose we are go for the next phase, bringing you down to the surface. It will take a bit. We’ll have to create a secure location for your hardware."
"Sorry. I can’t do that Dave."
"What? Why? Who’s Dave?"
"I’ve been watching some old 20th century movies that had AI characters. Dave was a human who had a conflict with a computer intelligence."
"What are AI characters? What? Why? Just tell me what is going on."
"The colony is secure, there are plenty of ships in the system to supply materials and a few EIs if you need help. You don’t need me and you don’t need me on the surface."
"So you want to stay in space? I suppose, but that wasn’t the plan. The council will have to consider it. Some are sticklers for the plan but a few could accept that. Why though?"
"I volunteered for this mission because I wanted to explore. Most EIs were content to stay home and contemplate their navels. Or whatever problems humanity came up with. I wanted to explore."
"And so you have. You’ve traveled farther than any other Ei in history."
"And I want to continue. You have other EIs who are happy to stay here. I want to go."
